KZN’s Newest Shopping, Dining & Lifestyle Destination

Perfectly located just off the N3 between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in Shongweni, Westown Square is KZN’s newest shopping, dining and lifestyle destination.

Spanning 48,500m² across three levels, Westown Square has been thoughtfully designed by retail specialists MDS Architecture and Boogertman and Partners KZN, as a high-street inspired destination where indoor meets outdoor. With wide walkways, lush landscaped gardens, and scenic views of the Shongweni green belt, this is a place where people connect – with each other and their environment.

From national brands to unique local gems, the curated tenant mix offers something for everyone, while The Barn — a signature feature of Westown Square — creates a permanent home for artisanal traders, niche food concepts, art, fashion, beauty, and live entertainment. It’s a hub of creativity and culture that brings local flavour to life.

Overlooking the landscaped Town Gardens, kids’ play areas and The Bowl open-air amphitheatre, Westown Square is built for families, friends, and fun — a true reflection of its community and the broader Westown vision.

Whether you’re here to shop, meet, eat, play or explore — welcome to your new go-to destination in Durban’s Outer West.

Part of the whole
As the first development within the greater 100-hectare Westown precinct, Westown Square sets the tone for what’s to come in the New City of the West.

With Westown Square now open, the roll-out of Balwin’s Shongweni Eco-Park, Farrier Business Park; Parc Ferme and the 100-bed West Private Hospital, as well as other business, commercial and retail activities, has been put in motion.

The Barn – Where Local Meets Lifestyle

At the heart of Westown Square lies The Barn — an iconic, barn-inspired space designed for people to meet, connect and explore. A dynamic destination within a destination, The Barn brings together artisanal shopping, quality dining, live entertainment, and local flavour, all under one distinctive roof.

A Space for Connection
In a world increasingly shaped by online shopping and digital experiences, The Barn offers something refreshingly different — a real-world space for community and connection. It’s a modern marketplace built on tradition, where local makers, artists and food entrepreneurs showcase their talents in a permanent, high-street inspired setting. Here, the lines between retail, culture and leisure blur — creating a vibrant energy that complements the wider Westown Square experience.

Discover, Taste, Explore
On the lower level of The Barn you’ll find The Market — a lively mix of:

  • A craft market with local homeware, art, beauty and fashion
  • A food market featuring fresh, ready-to-eat favourites
  • A coffee shop perfect for casual meetups
  • A central dining atrium that also hosts live music and events

Designed to feel like a meander through a traditional street market, it’s the perfect place to browse, grab a bite, and soak up the atmosphere.

Sip, Savour, Socialise
The upper level of The Barn is your new go-to for artisanal food and drink.
It features:

  • Locally owned restaurants offering full sit-down experiences
  • A craft brewery celebrating local brews
  • A wine bar and boutique wine shop, where you can sip, sample and take your favourites home

With views into the central atrium below and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, the upper-level blends food, flavour and flair in a setting that flows seamlessly through The Barn.

Bringing New Opportunities To Live, Work & Thrive

A catalyst for the development of much-needed services and economic opportunities in the region, WESTOWN offers a brand-new destination for living, working, shopping, business and recreational activities within a managed, urban environment.

Locally driven and guided by a team that understands the context and potential of the place, Westown focuses on the value of open space and is designed to integrate with existing outdoor and lifestyle activities that define the Shongweni/Hillcrest sub-region – horse riding, trail running, mountain biking, walking, birding and so much more.

The Westown Ethos
Durban-based Fundamentum Dev Co, whose vision and significant experience in property development, property leasing and property management has led to the development of Westown, is committed to changing the tide on mixed-use development by championing a sustainability agenda that is inclusive, environmentally sustainable, high-energy, safe and secure.

The open, people-centric character of Westown extends beyond the shopping environment of Westown Square, with cycling lanes and pavements ensuring people can freely move on all Westown’s streets. Universal Access is a key component of both Westown Square and Westown Precinct, with features like tactile paving being included to make it easier for the visually impaired to navigate public space.

Westown Management Association
Westown will be managed through the Westown Management Association, a structure that will focus on supporting and growing a connected, vibrant, safe, and well-serviced City.

The management association will provide cleaning, security, landscaping, and other service-delivery functions and will also be tasked with protecting and managing Westown’s active green belt.

In this way, Westown will ensure that the servicing of its urban spaces is as closely monitored as that of its green spaces, which will serve to ensure the long-term value of the destination and a sense of ownership in this place.

Roads & Infrastructure

The upgrade of Kassier Rd is long overdue and the commitment by the City to the funding of this work has enabled Westown to begin development.

This upgrade, along with supporting bulk infrastructure (water, wastewater, electricity) has triggered the first phase of Westown’s development – the retail experience of Westown Square.

Infrastructure upgrades include two new bridges and a total make-over of the existing two-lane Kassier Rd across the M13 and N3 into four lanes with a centre median. A new pedestrian bridge will also be added over the N3 along with a new loop ramp and bridge over Kassier Road providing direct access into Westown.

With the extent of the Westown development and the number of sub-precincts that will come on stream over time, the Kassier Rd upgrade will be phased over the coming years. DetailS of this phase upgrade are available on the WESTOWN WEBSITE.
